Origin of Meor Surname
Mir
1. Muslim (common in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India): from a title of Persian origin, a short form of Arabic Amir ‘prince’, ‘commander’.

The history of our family names

Today most of the members of our family only use the last name Shahdad in their full names. But actually, we have a full family name which has been passed on to us by our ancestors. For example, the full name of Mohammad, one of the younger members of our family, is Qazi Mir Syed Mohammad Shahdad Bukhari. The importance of each name in our full family name is very significant and tells us a lot about our ancerstors and their history.

The surname Bukhari was used by our first ancestor in Kashmir, Mir Mohamed Ali Bukhari. He was not originally from Kashmir and our family tradition believes that he came from cetral asia, specifically from Bukhara in the present day Uzbekistan. Unfortunately very little is known about the history of our family before he arrived in Kashmir. But having this surname links us to our central asian heritage.

While studying the history of Kashmir by Hassan (Gulshan-i-Kashmir), this fact has come to light that in Kashmir there are two uses of the surname Mir, either before or after a person's name. Whenever the surname Mir occurs at the head of a name like Mir Mohamed Amin Mantaqi, Mir Hassan Mantaqi, etc. it means being a descendent of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and wherever Mir occurs at the end of a name like Ghani Mir, Maqbool Mir, Samad Mir,etc. it means a title holder of the great family of Mughals, and is a short form of Mirza or Amirzada. In this background Khwaja Mohamed Azam Dedmari, the famous historian of Kashmir, while touching on the reign of Sultan Zainulabidin Budshah has reported that one of the great sons of Moghal dynasty and a great Mughal by the name of Mir Mohamed Ali Bukhari, our first ancestor in Kashmir, had laid the basis of this Mughal dynasty in Kashmir. He came to Kashmir during the reign of Sultan Zainulabidin Budshah as a guest of the king. He was the first ancestor of our family in Kashmir.

Mir is a title which is derived from the Arabic title Emir or Amir (Arabic: أمير). It was adopted in many languages under Islamic influence, such as Farsi (مير), Pashto and Urdu, meaning leader of a group or tribe in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
In Iran, Mir has also been formally used as a high title of nobility and honor. This title is also used widely in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and several other countries of Asia.

Amongst Muslims, it has become an interchangeable synonym of Sayyid (or Syed), meaning "relative of prophet Muhammad".

6. Syyeds

To quote Hassan the Syyidis came to Kashmir during the time of Sultans either on account of the turmoil created by Timur's invasions or through the enticement of the local Sultans. They are regarded the most respected class owning to their descent from the Prophet. They have maintained their identity by continuing the profession of 'Pir Muridi'. In the past, anybody who would adopt a different trade or profession would no longer claim to be a Sayed. But nowadays almost all the Sayeds have opted for secular jobs and hold very attractive and lucrative administrative posts.. Hassan located eight categories of Sayeds of superior rank: and position. They are (1) Qadiri (2) Nagashbandi (3) Andrabi (4) Mantaqi (5) Dehbidt (6) Dawariki (7) Hamdani (8) Other Syyids who are the follower of the Syyids who had settled down in Kashmir. Some of them. attend to. farming also. Census report of 1911 states that the titular nomenclature of the Syyed is 'Mir' and curiously enough the epithet 'Mir' changes its significance just as it is used either as an affix or prefix: to the name of a Syyed. A Syyed's position whether he is a priest or a layman, is determined according the word 'Mir' standing before or after his name. They are, further subdivided in the following classes viz., those (a), who practise 'Pirmuridi' the spiritual intution to disciples and b) who have taken to agriculture.

7. Mughals

They came to Kashmir, during the rule of Sultans,. from Khurasan and Turkistan, and settled permanently here. They are not a numerous body in Kashmir. They have lost all the traces of their descent by intermarrying with the ordinary Muslims of Kashmir. Their surnames are Mir, Beg, Bandi, Bach and Ashai.
Mir: This is a corrupted form of Mirxa (Mir plus: Zada). The title Mir was common among the Syyids, and Mughals. According to Hassan the Syyeds prefix the word 'Mir' to their names e.g., Mir Mubarak and Mir Maqbool, whereas the Mughals use it as suffix to their names. (viz., Aziz Mir, Gaffar Mir etc.) However, out of respect and reverence some Mughals would be called Mir as prefix, like Mir Ghulam Qadir. However Mr. Lawrence gives us another version of the 'Mir' as a surname. He says, "Mir is the Kram name of the Sayads. While he retains his saintly profession the Mir is prefixed to his name".
